The University of Vienna was founded by Duke Rudolph IV in 1365. 650 years later, 6,800 researchers conduct basic and applied research at the 15 faculties and 4 centres of the University of Vienna, thus tackling present and future challenges.
The vast array of disciplinary and interdisciplinary research at the University of Vienna includes theology, law, business, economics and statistics, computer science, historical and philological studies, social sciences, psychology, life sciences, natural sciences, mathematics, sport science and teacher education.
The University of Vienna’s vision is to become one of the leading research universities in Europe. In 2015 the University of Vienna raised funding revenues of about EUR 80,4 million. At the University of Vienna 34 ERC grant holders are conducting research. In 2015 alone, the prestigious ERC grants were awarded to three of our researchers.
The University of Vienna supports their researchers’ mobility and is an attractive destination for international researchers: In 2014, 76 per cent of our new professors are appointed from international universities. Each semester the University of Vienna welcomes numerous guest scientists.

With its Main Building on Universitätsring and the University’s Campus in Vienna’s ninth district, the University of Vienna is fortunate to be right in the city centre. This location facilitates exchange between researchers, teaching staff and Vienna’s population. Additionally, the University of Vienna has 70 locations that shape Vienna’s cityscape.
The Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Vienna is characterised by a great variety of disciplines, which include all aspects of life, its development, evolution and diversity, and its interaction with the environment. It is of central importance for the Faculty to pursue a fundamental systemic approach. The Faculty’s structure reflects its topic areas and research foci, which range from microorganisms to humans and also include environment, health and nutrition. The focus of research embraces many different approaches ranging from genetic and (functional) genomic focuses to structural analysis, as well as from physiology and ecology to biomathematics, in-silico approaches and theory formation.
The Division of Systematic and Evolutionary Botany aims to understand biodiversity in all relevant ecological and evolutionary dimensions. Combining expertise from ecology, morphology, and evolutionary biology and by investigating plants, fungi, and animals, research as well as teaching in our department is highly interdisciplinary. As biodiversity is currently threatened by human impacts on the biosphere, an important aspect of our work is also to develop and improve science-based rationales for management and conservation of biodiversity.
NWFP WORK FOCUS
Our research objectives are to identify patterns of plant and fungal diversity at various hierarchical levels and to understand the underlying evolutionary processes. To this end, a variety of methodological approaches is used including genomics, cytogenetics, molecular phylogenetics and phytochemistry.
The knowledge and expertise gained from our research further provide the basis for taxonomy, floristics, and conservation. Likewise, they are essential part of research oriented teaching at all academic levels.
